Volunteer Spotlight: Jerry S.

Apr 18, 2022

Jerry has been a volunteer at Boca Helping Hands in our East Boca Raton location since 2018. He’s originally from the Philadelphia area, and his professional career was in recruiting and sales training for a Fortune 500 Company before retiring early at the age of 52.

Though his journey with BHH began a few years ago after an online search, his volunteerism started when he was 15 years old. From wheeling hospital patients, tutoring kids, recording textbooks for the blind and dyslexic, and much more, Jerry has incorporated volunteerism into the fabric of his being.

He feels he’s been extraordinarily lucky in life and says, “when you’re blessed with enough food, shelter, and apparel, what else is there but giving back to others less fortunate?”

Since joining the BHH Family, he’s had many volunteer jobs, including making peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, helping out in our warehouse, washing dishes in the kitchen, and distributing pantry bags of groceries. Now, he serves as our Tuesday shift Kitchen Leader to produce lunch for several hundred people alongside a fantastic team.

He finds the work with BHH to be filled with love and humanity, and extremely rewarding as “thank you’s and bless you’s from our clientele come from the heart and go straight to mine.”

Jerry was recently awarded the Kitchen Volunteer of the Year and we are thankful for his commitment to BHH.
